japan face fresh energy challenge
China trials 'energy-saving' underwater data centers
An underwater data center being developed by Chinese maritime technology company Highlander is seen under construction at a shipyard in Nantong, in China's eastern Jingsu province. Nantong, China - Power-hungry data centers run hot, so one Chinese company is planning to submerge a pod of servers in the sea off Shanghai with hopes of solving computing's energy woes. On a wharf near the city, workers were finishing off the large yellow capsule -- a foray into alternative tech infrastructure that faces questions over its ecological impact and commercial viability. The world's websites and apps rely on physical data centers to store information, with growing use of artificial intelligence contributing to skyrocketing demand for the facilities. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Data centers in space? Jeff Bezos says it's possible
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos speaks at the main panel of Italian Tech Week 2025 in Turin, Italy, on Friday. TURIN - Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicted on Friday gigawatt-scale data centers will be built in space within the next 10 to 20 years and that continuously available solar energy meant they would eventually outperform those based on Earth. Speaking at the Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos also compared the surge in artificial intelligence to the internet boom of the early 2000s, urging optimism despite the risk of speculative bubbles. The concept of orbital data centers has gained traction among tech giants as those on Earth have driven up demand for electricity and water to cool their servers. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Hong Kong to install surveillance cameras with AI facial recognition
Hong Kong has already installed almost 4,000 CCTV cameras under a police crime-fighting program. That number will increase to a total of 60,000 by 2028, according to documents submitted to the legislature. Hong Kong - Hong Kong plans to install tens of thousands of surveillance cameras that will make use of AI-powered facial recognition, the city's security chief said on Friday, bringing it closer to China where authorities often monitor public spaces with cutting-edge technology. The Chinese finance hub has already installed almost 4,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras under a police crime-fighting program. That number will increase to a total of 60,000 by 2028, according to documents submitted to the legislature.

Boom or bubble: How long can the AI investment craze last?
AI chip giant Nvidia announced last week that it would invest $100 billion to help OpenAI, the front-runner in generative AI, build data centers. The staggering investments in artificial intelligence keep coming: Last week, AI chip giant Nvidia announced it would invest $100 billion to help OpenAI, the front-runner in generative AI, build data centers. How are these enormous sums possible when the returns on investments, at least for now, pale in comparison? AI-related spending is soaring worldwide, expected to reach approximately $1.5 trillion by 2025, according to U.S. research firm Gartner, and over $2 trillion in 2026 -- nearly 2% of global GDP. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Japan's Digital Agency to cooperate with OpenAI on administrative tools
Japan's Digital Agency to cooperate with OpenAI on administrative tools The Digital Agency will enable its employees to use OpenAI's cutting-edge large language model-based AI tools for their work. The Digital Agency said Thursday that it will cooperate with OpenAI to fully use artificial intelligence technology in administrative work and service. As part of the initiative, the agency will enable its employees to use OpenAI's cutting-edge large language model-based AI tools for their work. It is also considering joint development with the U.S. company of a generative AI app for administrative use. The agency plans to provide its employees with access to generative AI tools and encourage other government agencies to adopt these services starting as early as fiscal year 2026.

Deepfake political scam ads surge on Meta platforms, watchdog says
According to Meta's rules, advertisers who seek to run political ads in the United States have to undergo a special authorization process. Washington - Scammers are among the top political ad spenders on Meta's platforms, using deepfake videos of American politicians -- including President Donald Trump -- to promote fake government benefits, a watchdog group said Wednesday. The nonprofit Tech Transparency Project said it identified 63 scam advertisers that collectively spent $49 million on Facebook and Instagram, often targeting seniors with ads promoting fake stimulus checks, government spending cards and healthcare payments. The ads have reached tens of thousands of the platforms' users. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Why is Denmark being targeted with mystery drone flights?
Why is Denmark being targeted with mystery drone flights? Police officers stand guard after all traffic has been closed at Copenhagen Airport due to drone reports on Sept. 22 | Ritzau Scanpix / via REUTERS Copenhagen - Denmark's support for Ukraine, its lack of anti-drone defenses and this week's EU summit in Copenhagen could all explain the unidentified drone sightings over Danish airspace that have been widely blamed on Russia. Drones have been seen across the Scandinavian country, including over military sites, since Sept. 22, prompting brief closures at several airports and a ban on all civilian drone flights until Friday. The drone intrusions were extremely well-executed and also clearly designed to humiliate the authorities, just to show that you can actually fly drones over Danish airports and critical infrastructure, said Rasmus Dahlberg, an expert on hybrid threats. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Japan's Kioxia sees AI driving strong memory growth for years
Japan's Kioxia sees AI driving strong memory growth for years Kioxia has been aggressively investing in its main chip factories as it aims to close the gap to rivals Samsung and SK Hynix. Kioxia anticipates demand for NAND storage will grow by roughly 20% each year as AI data center operators keep scaling up. The Tokyo-based memory maker is confident that the market will sustain that rapid clip of expansion and is making investment decisions on a monthly basis to ensure its new plant is up to the task of filling the demand, Executive Vice President Tomoharu Watanabe said. Kioxia's specialty is in NAND flash memory, which is used everywhere from smartphones and laptops to the fast-access sections of data center operations. Demand is strong, especially from hyperscalers who need chips for generative AI purposes," Watanabe said on Tuesday. We're also hearing from customers who need to replace data center servers they installed five to six years ago, as well as some saying they can't get enough hard drives."

Japan to provide about 10 surveillance drones to Sri Lanka
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba (right) attends a joint news conference with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Prime Minister's Office on Monday. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met in Tokyo on Monday and agreed that Japan will provide about 10 surveillance drones, worth about ¥500 million ($3.36 million), to the South Asian nation's navy. This will be Japan's first provision of defense equipment to Sri Lanka under its official security assistance program. The stability and development of Sri Lanka, which is located at a strategic point in the Indian Ocean, is extremely important, Ishiba said at a joint news conference after the meeting. In response, the president voiced his commitment to creating a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region.
